MSNBC is great for comic relief sometimes, isn’t it?
Forget about the insult to Catholics, folks like this don’t see people as people. They are categorizeable entities. That’s it. Listen to what New York magazine’s contributing editor Chris Smith says about Sotomayor: “Here’s a trifecta: Latin, female, American. It would do a lot of good.”
Whether you like her or not, Sotomayor is a woman of accomplishment. He says she’s Latin and a woman. That’s who she is to MSNBC analysts.

Objectifying. Just were men want women to be.

Her femaleness apparently trumps the fact that she's not a practicing Catholic as far as MSNBC is concerned. Total idiots. Of course NPR wasn't much better (they suggested a woman pope in the future), when they ridiculed an explanation by an archbishop that this wasn't a political position, but the spiritual leader of the body of Christ. That was written off as just so much idealism, and not realistic at all.

Sotomayor "has mixed it up in the real world?" What on earth does that mean? What world does she think John Paul II and Benedict came from? Yeah, the only experience of the real world they had was in Communist Poland and Nazi Germany. . . . It's hard even to know where to start with this kind of ignorance.

The counterargument to "woman pope" nonsense is, all Korean shamans are women. Even if they're male: the few men who can channel the gods do their rituals in women's clothing. Now quick, anyone know what women's status is in Korean society? (Hint: South Korea is experiencing almost as much of a surfeit of girls as China is, without having a One-Child Policy.)
Similarly, among the Navajo and Hopi, descent is through the maternal line and women own the property—but religion is almost exclusively male-dominated, mostly because the gods are seen as too dangerous for women to approach.
Just because the priesthood is all one sex has no relation to the status of that sex in the broader society. Maybe if Western PCniks weren't a bunch of Eurocentric provincials, they would know that.
