After A&E fired Phil Robertson for saying what every good Christian should believe, social media has been abuzz. One of the recurring themes has been puzzlement about why A&E would cut off its nose to spite its face. Duck Dynasty is the franchise right now, why would they risk destroying their own cash cow?
To understand the why, we have to go back to the beginning. Duck Dynasty is not the show that they wanted, it is the show that got away from them.
It seems what the producers intended and what A&E envisioned with the show is much different than the show that they ended up with ,but they didn’t do anything about it because it was so wildly popular and so wildly profitable. But even with all the money, they have never really been comfortable with what happened.

"Turning around and demanding a Duck Dynasty star suddenly become the equivalent of a Rachel Maddow guest is preposterous and unfair." – Andrew Sullivan

2,000 years of Christian civilization. 2,000 years of education, art, music, hospitals, orphanages, truth, beauty — and this all ends neither with a bang nor a whimper, but with some hairy honey boo-boo fellows dressed like vegetation discussing certain preferences.

Of course you know who couldn't stand the fact that he was on the same side as a conservative for very long and had to find some reason to get upset.
One wonders if he'll be joining the group and asking to take away Phil's grandson soon.

Mark 'you're poison' Shea strikes again! So glad I don't read him anymore.

The sodomy issue continues to be a "who's on the Lord's side" issue among Protestants and Catholics. Most traditional, conservative Protestants and Catholics will have Phil's back on this. The liberals among both groups are going to whine that Phil is a homophobe backwoods bigot.
Mark Shea, as usual, is blatantly dishonest and ignorant. The lynching photo he posted on his site is from Duluth, Minnesota in the 1920's. What does that have to do with the Robertson's? Bad feelings between the races existed in all fifty states in the past and continues to this day. If Marky boy is going to rip Phil (and the South) for being "racist" it would behoove him to look at his own home town's past history. No part of America was ever exempt from racial tensions and restrictive laws concerning race. It's the height of real bigotry to point at the South as being "racist".

As the French say, it is only "the truth that wounds." I think Phil's comments were perfectly valid, though a little coarse, and he's just quoting scripture mostly. The people ready to tar and feather him would probably do the same to Jesus were He here saying something similar.

Oh it's getting so much better in the comments. We have a full blown farce here…
Shea: Nobody's calling you to pass judgment on him. What my post was calling Christians to do was exercise a little discernment and prudence in hoisting this guy's banner as the Face of Christian Resistance since, like it or not, his stupid remarks can and will be used to paint them as saying "Jim Crow wasn't so bad."
Stu: Just like the Pope's comments, taken in snippets, can and will be used to paint all manner of picture.
Discernment is great but it goes both ways. No need to come to the conclusion that he is condoning Jim Crow when you don't have proof of such.
Shea: Likening remarks that suggest "Jim Crow wasn't so bad" to anything the pope has ever said just comes off sounding like "Jim Crow wasn't so bad". Re-do.
So remember: If the pop culture edits the Pope's words into something they're not, it's their fault. If it edits someone else's words into something they're not, it's that person's fault (and their supporters should abandon them). One wonders how Shea would deal with everybody abandoning him should an interviewer twist & edit his words around.

This piece (the full one at NCR) was linked on Ace of
Spades HQ. The Archbolds have made it into the moronosphere! 🙂

But remember, Shea has been blogging for, what, three months? He doesn't understand that immediately going "Yes, but he's not Jesus!!!!1!!" as your response isn't refusing to be Conservative or appreciate Conservatives, it's just reminding people how nice, sweet, and non-judgementative Liberal rhetoric is.
Anyway, I originally just wanted to congratulate Patrick on his linkage. Great article!

Well shea's continuing:
Sound he be put on virtual suicide watch? It's like he wants to torpedo his blog now.

In a nutshell, if you think Phi Robertson had no idea of the kind of uproar his outspoken comments were going to cause, then I have several beautiful steel bridges in Pittsburgh that I would like to sell to you.
