He essentially predicted his own death in two to three years. The press seems to be running heavy with this story but the 77 year old Pontiff seemed to be speaking lightheartedly though.

He also raised the possibility of retiring from the papacy “even if it does not appeal to some theologians.”

“Benedict XVI opened a door,” he reportedly said of the option of retiring.
