The Church was a bit much on the sidelines on this one. I was a bit surprised. And saddened. So it’s good to hear a Cardinal say it like it is.
The same-sex marriage referendum has been labelled a “defeat for humanity” by a senior cardinal in the Vatican.
Cardinal Pietro Parolin said the result left him “feeling very sad”. He also quoted Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin, who said the Catholic Church in Ireland would have to take the “reality” of the vote on board.
The cardinal, in his strongly worded statement, added: “I believe that we are talking here not just about a defeat for Christian principles, but also about a defeat for humanity.”
This is a disaster.
