DePaul president vetoes “Unborn Lives Matter” poster, cites “bigotry”
DePaul University President Father Dennis Holtschneider has taken the reportedly unusual step of involving himself in the approval process of student club posters in order to ban a pro-life sign designed by the DePaul College Republicans. After denying approval to the group’s “Unborn Lives Matter” poster, Fr. Holtschneider sent out a letter citing “bigotry that occurs under the cover of free speech” and said the poster “provokes the Black Lives Matter movement.” He continued: “Some people will say that DePaul’s stance unfairly silences speech to appease a crowd. Nothing can be further from the truth.” The full letter is here.
The message sent to students: It’s not okay to defend Church teaching if it might hurt someone’s feelings.
Marquette University: We respect pro-abortion activism
Some students at Marquette decided it would be a great idea to vandalize a sign set up next to a memorial for unborn babies with pro-abortion propaganda and coat hangers. The act was cheered online by the College Democrats and a feminist group on campus, that also expressed their displeasure with Church teaching on the sacredness of human life. The university responded to the incident by opposing the vandalism, but said, “Our issue does not lie in the expression of varying viewpoints,” and encouraged respect and inclusivity for pro-abortion / anti-Catholic propaganda.
