Did Jesus Come to Secure Mob Rule?
“And Jesus said to them ‘Truly, truly I say unto you. Unless you give into mob rule, you shall have no life in you. Unto the majority I give the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever they bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever they loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven. Tough Nuggies.”
That is the loose translation of one Filipino legislator, Rep. Janette Garin, who says of the Church and her stand against contraception “The Church should submit to the desire of the majority,”
Yeah, ’cause that always ends well.
The lawmaker urged the Church to stop using its influence to block a proposal in the House of Representatives for the allocation of P1 billion for the purchase contraceptives to control the ballooning population.
“It’s difficult when the Church is fighting you…,” Garin said.
She also said that because of the Church’s influence, Malacañang has reduced the P1 billion allocation to P130 million for the contraceptive program. “[Because of the Church’s influence] what’s happening is the actual fund is not being implemented,” she said.
Poor dears. The Church doesn’t give into the culture of death so they are the bad guys. I must admit, I am a little jealous. Can you you imagine Bishops in the U.S. picking a fight over contraception. Lately we have seen bishops even be weak-kneed over abortion. Contraception is an argument long since ceded to majority rule. Why upset the mob? The Filipino Bishops have apparently not caved yet:
The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines rejected the proposal and suggested that the fund should be used to finance pro-poor projects.
Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, CBCP president, said contraceptives “are wrong in themselves” because they violate “nature and God’s law.”
“It is not just a matter of being conservative, but also of being morally right,” he said in a statement posted on the CBCP Web site www.cbcponline.net.
Concerns over what is morally right rather than what is realistic or expedient. Somehow, while reading this, I kept expecting a quote from Bishop Raymondo Jose Garcia Juan Valdez Burke. Instead, we have Archbishop Oscar Cruz and his appeal to logic.
“Logic dictates that if you use your sexuality you should be open to bearing a child. That is the reason, it does not really require an act of faith or an act moral it is just plain logic,” he said.
Yeah. That ought to do the trick.
