Not only is it bad enough that such a man was invited to a Catholic school, but for the diocesan newspaper to extol “protecting a woman’s right to choose” is adding insult to injury.
Bishop Michael R. Cote needs to do something, regarding the school and the paper, about this immediately. His E-mail: bpcote@norwichdiocese.net As always, be firm but respectful.
Thanks very much to Victor for sending us a copy of this outrage.

I know it's nothing new, but it never ceases to amaze me how many Catholics are either pro-choice or apathetic on the issue. How can so many people be so starkly out of sync with such a fundamental Christian principle as defending a person's right to life? I think the information and scientific facts need to be more widely and effectively disseminated. After all, the pro-life argument can be argued without religion at all – the science supports it, despite contrary talking points by the other side.

How horrible. The sub-editor who was asleep at the switch or cravenly and consciously let htat in deserves serious disciplinary action.

Incredible. I live in the Nutmeg State and there is a tendency here to be asleep at the switch.

I just sent an email.
Sadly, I sometimes cringe at certain items in our own diocesan newspaper, (usually relating to "social justice" or the environment.) Though nothing this egregious has ever been published, thankfully.

Just goes to show that even the Church is not immune to the Stockholm syndrome.

Wow. That's my diocese and I know the parish. The bishop will be hearing from me.

I see it's already been pulled from the online version:

A FUNDAMENTAL DEMOCRATIC RIGHT TO LIFE IS ENUNCIATED AS “SELF-EVIDENT” AND “UNALIENABLE” IN OUR DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. The “Right to choose” violates the most basic civil right inscribed in our founding principles, the right to be recognized and acknowledged as a sovereign person begotten by the will of God and the laws of nature and nature’s God also inscribed by our Declaration of Independence. The state gives citizenship and makes vital statistics. Contrarily, any person who repudiates our founding principles repudiates his own citizenship. Repudiating our founding principles, as atheists and abortionists do by denying the Person of God as a citizen of the world, the newly begotten sovereign person as a child of God, requires witness and testimony to prove perjury, treason and sedition by these Sovereign Persons Whose sovereignty constitutes our nation, to remove their citizenship.

Hello, New Haven? May I speak with Supreme Knight Carl Anderson please?

That sickens me. Letter sent.
It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones. [Luke 17:2]

The newspaper actually presented the news in a fair way by keeping that information in there. If they intentionally kept the caption out, they would be intentionally misleading the readers about who Mr. Jepsen really is; and who Ms. Tortora thinks are quality speakers for the children. She has been exposed, thank you Four County Catholic.

Presenting the story in that way is gravely scandalous. The caption presents the "right to choose" as if it were a neutral matter of opinion. Such a presentation of this issue has led numerous people including Catholics to consider and accept abortion and contraception as positions that they hold. The staff of the paper must clearly condemn their support the Star of the Sea's allowing such a monster to speak in a Catholic venue, especially to children. The Vatican has repeatedly condemned allowing pro-aborts and other people who hold gravely evil positions such supporting contraception or homosexual lifestyles contrary the Teachings of the Church from ever speaking publicly at a Catholic venue. The Four County Catholic and the Star of the Sea of the Sea school staff involved in allowing this fiasco should issue a public apology for such a scandal.

I do think using those words implied that the reporter and the paper are complying with the general understanding of the issue and how it should be viewed.
At the same time, I can see following scenario:
1. Politician visits.
2. School, politician's office, or both put out press release to show how wonderful it is.
3. Reporter is assigned story.
4. Reporter has a hmmmmmm moment, as he/she realizes that this guy's, um. . . .
5. Reporter writes caption to clue in the public, if they care to be clued in, that the school is exposing their kids to propaganda from someone trying to get their votes for an anti-Catholic agenda by schmoozing their kids.
6. But, he doesn't actually feel like putting up with the guff (and risking his/her job) by being too obvious about it. So he uses language that won't look like he's "attacking" the politician.
As such, I blame the school. And the parents who did not go in and complain.
When I worked at a 100% Hispanic school, the politicians loved to come in and talk to the kids in Spanish. The kids were a little perplexed. Most of them got the feeling they were being used, but shrugged it off. After all, that would make that guy just a horrific human being. . .

disgraceful, but i have heard of some newspaper being pro- abortion, they are the wolves in sheep clothing!

This kind of thing is sadly, par-for-the-course in Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Norwich. Schools are run by pastors, and only vaguely overseen by a Diocesan Superintendent. All kinds of foolishness goes on and when it become egregious enough for many complaints, the Bishop then closes down the school. They seem to view schools as little more than a drain on the budget. The practicing faithful have little chance of their kids getting a Catholic education in Norwich.

The diocese has posted this on its website:
Dear Four County Catholic Readers:
We want you to know we deeply regret that in the April Four County Catholic, a photograph of Connecticut Attorney General George C. Jepsen appeared on page 27 with a caption that listed his positions on a number of critical issues, including his pro-choice stance. Our regret is that listing his position may have caused even the slightest inference that the Diocese of Norwich in any way accepts or condones his position. The Four County Catholic has been and continues to be an ardent and outspoken advocate of the right to life position — without exception. The appearance of Attorney General’s bio information anywhere in the newspaper was inappropriate. My sincerest apologies.

When the diocese has a cretin like this come out to tell Catholic kids how important it is for women to have the right to choose to slaughter innocent children, you've pretty much got your sign that the apostasy is complete. I imagine the Bishop is collecting gold right now to cast the golden calf.
