The Province of St. Joseph of the Dominican Order, sometimes called the “Eastern” province, released some pictures of their novices, who, traditionally, receive the habit on August 8, St. Dominic’s feast day. This photo shows the novices who just finished their novitiate together with those coming in. Please pray for them.

1) This is awesome.
2) It's both sad and funny to realize my brain says "wizard" before it says "monk." (My excuse: it's the same as watching Casablanca: some things are so iconic and original that later imitators are much more famous.)

I got the visual. I will pray. Wonderful.

I was very happy to see this here for two main reasons:
1. It's always great to see something about vocations.
2. I personally know two of the members of the 2011 Novitiate class (one of whom is a very good friend of mine from college).

It's excellent news, of course but where are the monks? The gentlemen in that photo are all friars, which is a very different animal altogether!

The Dominicans have friars, cloistered nuns, and religious sister. No monks.

*sigh* And the point goes by unobserved….
I'm rather sure they don't have wizards, either; the point is that on seeing a group of men in robes of a sort of style, a fictional ID is made rather than a religious ID. I chose "monk" because, outside of Friar Tuck, monks are what folks are familiar with from popular culture. (Which, sadly, is the place most folks will know anyone from– I was in my twenties before I ever saw a nun, and I still haven't knowingly met a monk or friar. Heck, outside of a religious setting, I've only seen a priest once or twice. Much to be said for religious garb.)

I live in the Orlando diocese and we had a seminarian in our parish over the summer. I made friends with him and he recently posted a picture of a portion of the seminarians from our diocese on his facebook page. I am very happy to report that there are a LOT of them. I was very excited to see that.
