Some species are just too dumb to survive. Case in point, the MoDo Bird.
Maureen Dowd, Catholic means never having to say you’re sorry.
I ALWAYS liked that the name of my religion was also an adjective meaning all-embracing.
I was a Catholic and I wanted to be catholic, someone engaged in a wide variety of things. As James Joyce wrote in “Finnegans Wake:” “Catholic means ‘Here comes everybody.’ ”
So it makes me sad to see the Catholic Church grow so uncatholic, intent on loyalty testing, mind control and heresy hunting. Rather than all-embracing, the church hierarchy has become all-constricting.
It was tough to top the bizarre inquisition of self-sacrificing American nuns pushed by the disgraced Cardinal Bernard Law. Law, the former head of the Boston archdiocese, fled to a plush refuge in Rome in 2002 after it came out that he protected priests who molested thousands of children.
…
The latest kooky kerfuffle was sparked by the invitation to Kathleen Sebelius, the health and human services secretary, to speak at a graduation ceremony at Georgetown University on Friday. The silver-haired former Kansas governor is a practicing Catholic with a husband and son who graduated from Georgetown. But because she fought to get a federal mandate for health insurance coverage of contraceptives and morning-after pills, including at Catholic schools and hospitals, Sebelius is on the hit list of a conservative Catholic group in Virginia, the Cardinal Newman Society, which militates to bar speakers at Catholic schools who support gay rights or abortion rights.
…
I called Cuomo to see if, as his son Andrew weighs running for president, he felt the church had grown less tolerant.“If the church were my religion, I would have given it up a long time ago,” he said. “All the mad and crazy popes we’ve had through history, decapitating the husbands of women they’d taken. All the terrible things the church has done. Christ is my religion, the church is not.
“If they make the mistake of saying that a politician has to put the church before the Constitution on abortion or other issues, there will be no senators or presidents or any other Catholics in government. The church would be wiser to take the path laid out for us by Kennedy than the path laid out for us by Santorum.”
I didn’t know you could pack so much stupid into one article.

"This is America. We don't hunt heresies here. We welcome them."
Yep. That's the state of religious reporting in America today. Say goodnight Gracie.

I think that she has mistaken several popes for King Henry VIII, who considered himself greater than the pope and actually did chop peoples heads off in marriage related disputes

Is the last paragraph a quote from MODo or from Cuomo? Cause I think if it's Cuomo he is a little bias on the Kennedy thing. Since when did Kennedy become pope? You are correct, my friend, this is stupid.

You can't even refute stupid like that. You can only laugh, cry or hit your head.

CINO (Catholic in name only) — or, as a friend of mine says: "Protestants who attend Mass." I understand our Bishops wanting to save the souls of these people, but isn't there a limit to the amount of scandal these people cause before the Bishops say "enough" and publicly excommunicate them?

The word "Catholic" does not refer so much to the inclusion of everyone, in fact probably not at all. It refers to the consistency of belief in all places. In ancient times, religions were centered in the country where they were practiced, and were regionally specific. Christianity, on the other hand, spread across national boundaries without losing identity or changing core teaching. The universality of "catholic" does not mean that anyone may belong regardless of belief or behavior. People who do not believe in the universal teachings of the Church, or behave in stubborn, unrepentant opposition to its moral demands have separated themselves from the Church, even if there has been no "formal statement" or excommunication. Ms. Dowd's premise is false, therfore, her entire following statements are skewed as well.

Even Alex VI wasn't so foolish as to cut off the heads of the women whom he took into bed…Modo Bird is just silly.

How ironic.
“All the mad and crazy popes we’ve had through history …"
Is he referring to the wealthy and influential political families (like the Borgias), who managed to worm their way into the Church, putting political power above fidelity to the Church teachings?
Look around today. Do you see any wealthy and influential political families who put political power above the Church's teachings?
Look. Look really hard.

Wow. Kennedy, and not Santorum. Someone that pretended to be catholic, instead of someone that is trying to actually BE Catholic. Oh, and let's not forget Cuomo admonishing/advising the Church on what would be "wiser."
What evs. I've always considered Mario Cuomo more as a semi-cuomo ;o)

If? If only.
"If they [teach, correctly] that a politician has to put the Church's teachings on abortion or other issues before [his political party platform], there will be no [pro-abortion] senators or presidents or any other [pro-abortion] Catholics in government."
True. True,indeed.

Let's go MODO!!! Way to say it like it is!!!! Oh dear, the Roman Catholic church is dying….should I cry? Boo Hoo to sexual predator priests who rape our sons, to insecure men who hate women, to those who have used the name and the spirituality of Jesus Christ to commit wars and murders!
Satan begone!
