To all those that think Roberts outsmarted the Dems I say: He curtailed congressional power by granting immense power it never had before? O the cleverness of me!
You want silver linings? Fine. America will be bankrupt long before a death panel can put me down. Who says I am not optimistic?
It seems that taxes, like beauty, is now in the eye of the beholder.
You want hope, then change (tactics)
I fear that conservatives think that using the same tactics we’ve been using will eventually lead to victory. Never. Gonna. Happen.
Doom is just another word for something left to lose.
Winners have no need of silver linings.
Republicans rationilize defeat better than anyone. ‘member the “We changed the conversation!” on the budget? That was a good one.
No Taxation Without Representation Actually Calling It Taxation

You just have to believe that "We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose" (Rom 8:28). All shall be well; there is no need to panic or fear.

We ought believe that AND let our God-given emotions compel us to action (prayer, fasting, writing campaigns, protesting, etc.) We cannot be passive in this instance and think it will all work out. That is not the Christian way. That is what a great many did in Nazi Germany, in the '60s, etc. Having fear in this moment can and should motivate us to fight for our principles. It is also okay to be in shock for a bit and then rally 'round the cause anew. 🙂

Pat, I'm right there with you. I am completely, wholly, and abjectly shocked. Just completely incredulous. It's like I woke up yesterday in an alternate universe. I'm just right there with you.

You're fucking insane. Seriously. God isn't real. Go rape a child

Lovely. Put your name on that above comment, Anonymous 4:33, you coward.
People just do not understand this idea of liberty. It is unreal. My husband is in shock. He has taken an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. It's meaningless now. It's awful and it will have far reaching consequences that we cannot even fathom.

Every now and then it's useful to let a comment stand because it just demonstrates the pure evil and hate of the other side. Other times, you just bring down an entire thread by letting the stench fester.
This would be one of those latter times.

I don't agree at all with your pessimism…the year is 2012, and there is an election coming up in mere months. The decision will have a huge effect on the election: whether Obama defeats Romney or Romney defeats Obama.
Why? Because if the Court struck Obamacare down, Obama would be able to point to it and say "Hey, that was our big thing but the bad guys killed it! The bad guys took away your healthcare!" and Romney would be finished giving Obama four more years.
However, since the Court upheld Obamacare, Obama can't run on it anymore! And it gets better: now we get to nail Obama for lying about Obamacare not being a tax!
Also remember that Justice Ginsburg dissented against Justice Roberts' opinion wherein he said that the Commerce Clause can NOT be used to dub Obamacare constitutional – the left is NOT happy that they can't use the Commerce Clause anymore! They always used to fall back on the Commerce Clause to support their ridiculous bosh, but now they can't. They have to call it a tax – which, now that it has been called a tax, will cause the country's opinion of Obamacare to hit rock bottom before we know it, and it will be so unpopular everyone will rally with the right in favor of its removal.
Finally, this is not the last straw. This is not our last gasp. This is not liberty's last chance. The only effects of the decision is that Obamacare is a tax (destining it for unpopularity) and that the only way to get rid of it is to repeal it, something which all the Republican candidates had been running on from the very beginning.
Maybe I'm just blithely optimistic…but I refuse to accept that Roberts would be so incredibly stupid without good reason. I will continue to believe that this decision from him puts us conservatives two or three steps ahead of the left in ways the left won't be able to predict before it's too late and Obama is defeated.

Hmm… so he chipped back at the commerce clause, while handing Congress back the whole enchilada via unlimited taxing powers.
Heck of a deal.
Why not just say the mandate was unconstitutional, uphold the rest, and lack of severability be damned? It's not like they hold to any other particular principles, why is "severability" so sacrosanct?
Now that the government can "tax" you for failing to get with the program, here is my short list of what the government cannot do:
