You just can’t make this stuff up. This is just insane but they’ve been doing it for centuries so who am I to judge. Rouketopolemos (which means”rocket war”) is held annually at Easter in the town of Vrontados on the Greek island of Chios. Two rival church congregations fire tens of thousands of home-made rockets across a huge ravine at the other church, with the objective of hitting the bell tower.
They count up the number of hits in the morning, I think, and declare a winner. However, invariably, both side declare victory so everyone’s happy. Seems a lot of tourists go check out this insane custom every year.
