Amazon’s Lord of the Rings show runners said the new series will be family friendly and ok, even for 11 year olds. That’s good news because I’d say my maturity level is just about around 11 years old, give or take a year or two at any given moment.
So, there were massive concerns (including me) that LOTR was going all Game of Thrones with its nudity and nihilism. But that doesn’t seem to be the case.
Screen Rant reports:
For Vanity Fair’s first look at the series, The Rings of Power showrunners recently spoke to the publication about what fans should expect from the Lord of the Rings series. McKay was very clear about one thing: the show will not feature Game of Thrones-level sex and violence and will instead be aimed at everyone, even “kids who are 11, 12, and 13.” Read what he had to say below:
[The goal was] to make a show for everyone, for kids who are 11, 12, and 13, even though sometimes they might have to pull the blanket up over their eyes if it’s a little too scary. We talked about the tone in Tolkien’s books. This is material that is sometimes scary—and sometimes very intense, sometimes quite political, sometimes quite sophisticated—but it’s also heartwarming and life-affirming and optimistic. It’s about friendship and it’s about brotherhood and underdogs overcoming great darkness.
I don’t know if they never intended to include that stuff or the blowback from Tolkien fans was so severe that they steered away from the controversy. It’s good news either way.
On the other hand, Amazon might be so big that it should be boycotted out of principle. I haven’t done my research on that yet but I see their trucks EVERYWHERE. It makes me feel icky inside. But anyway, LOTR won’t be Game of Thrones and that’s good news.
If you’re really into the geekery of Tolkien here’s a good vid for you to really delve into the details of LOTR’s Middle Earth and the new show. It’s made by a dude who literally calls himself “The Nerd of the Rings.” I don’t know. I think that’s kind of awesome that there’s a section of YouTube dedicated to geekery such as this. It makes me think that there’s something still ok on the internet besides this website.
