Elon Musk to Buy Twitter. What Does That Mean to Us?
In what’s being described as a “best and final” offer to buy Twitter Inc., Elon Musk has launched a “hostile takeover” bid of “$54.20 per share in cash.
In a tweet, Musk announced that he’d made an offer and linked to the SEC filing.
Musk’s offer would represent a 54 percent premium over the Jan 28. closing price and a value of about $43 billion” according to Bloomberg Business.
That’s big news but what does it mean to us. By us I mean Catholics.
I can tell you that CMR has thousands of followers but gets virtually no reaction from twitter because we’ve been shadow banned. We no longer have access to others. We simply don’t show up in anyone else’s feed. It’s happened to me on Facebook too.
This is why I say blogs are still the most useful to us because it’s much more difficult to “disappear” us on blogs.
But a Musk takeover of Twitter could be a return to free speech for millions. Literally millions. Think of all the things we were banned from saying about Covid and about Hunter Biden. Just banned for saying what later came to be acknowledged as truth.
But I’m more concerned, especially on Holy Thursday, with my ability as a Catholic to speak to people about matters of faith. Much of what we believe as far as issues of life, sexuality, and gender is now considered hate speech by Big Tech. We are not allowed to say things that we believe. If we say them, we get banned. Or sometimes we may self censor because we saw that they banned The Babylon Bee for calling Dr. Rachel Levine a man. That’s all it takes. This has a chilling impact throughout society. It’s essentially head on a pike strategy. They take out one of the big guys like President Trump, Tucker Carlson, or The Babylon Bee and then everyone out there gets the message to stay in line because if they’re willing to ban them then Big Tech would have no problem banning them.
As I’ve said before, there are usually three groups. The one looking to make a radical change, the other side who resists, and the people who just want to live their lives and will see who ends up the winner. The people in that group might have an opinion one way or the other but it doesn’t impel them to action. They’ll just wait and see.
So, if one side of the debate is completely silenced, then they assume that the radical side won and act accordingly. And think, about it, that’s pretty much where we are when it comes to gender issues and life issues. The news media rails against us, politicians label us racist without any basis, and the media portrays us mostly as lunatics. Most people I know roll their eyes and whisper about things like gender because they’ve come to believe that the other side won.
Well, this move by Musk could lead to an opening for the resisters. It could. I’m not saying it will but it could. In the end, I assume, Musk will do what’s best for Musk. I don’t know if that lines up with what I’m hoping. We shall see. But right now, it seems that his belief in a free speech zone would help Christians greatly. It would give us an opportunity to evangelize, to speak out mind, to engage in debate.
And that is the one thing the other side does not want. They do not like debate. To be fair, if you had to try to convince people on a daily basis that men menstruate, or that something other than a human being is in a woman’s womb, or that we are just happenstance soulless creatures on an insignificant rock hurtling through meaningless darkness then you probably wouldn’t want debate either.
Maybe this is an Easter Week miracle. God doesn’t just use saints. Or it could be Musk is trying to just drive up the stock price and then he’ll bail after selling high. I don’t know. I’m hoping for a change in Big Tech world. I’m hoping to have their heel removed from our throats. I’m praying that people (all people) have a chance to be heard because when large swaths of people feel unheard bad things happen. Very very bad things.
Let’s pray that everyone in this country feels heard.
