Ok. Maybe it’s me but is something happening? Right here? Right now?
Folk singer Oliver Anthony went from complete obscurity to having a three top hits on iTunes. This guy:
This guy is the biggest baddest new music star. He works in a factory and up until a week ago his YouTube page received a dozen or so hits on each video. The mainstream media are either ignoring him or railing against him by insinuating he’s a “Neo-Confederate.” I don’t know how they got there but they did.
Oliver Anthony opened up his first live appearance by reading from the Bible. This guy’s beating out Taylor Swift. And it’s just him and his guitar in the woods and his perspective.
And that’s the thing. It’s his perspective as a normal American that’s appealing to people. It’s protest music from the heart of America.
But the interesting thing to me is that it seems that people are essentially building a counter culture. We no longer depend on the mainstream culture entirely to spoon feed us what they want us to know.
On top of his top number three songs, the fourth is Jason Aldean’s “Try that in a small town” which is an ode to small town community and standing up against crime. The media railed against this song. It was number one until Oliver Anthony beat it out.
The biggest most surprising movie of the year stars Jim Caviezel. The media ignored but then attacked this movie. The Sound of Freedom surprised everyone by beating out Indiana Jones and Mission Impossible domestically.
Father Mike Schmitz and Jeff Cavins’ “Catechism in a Year” podcast with Ascension Presents ranked No. 1 in all categories on Apple Podcast charts.
What is going on?
It’s called a counter culture. We are it. Hey, you want to be in the counter culture nowadays have a bunch of kids and attend Mass. We’re the new hippies, dude.
This is a first step showing we have established our own lines of communication. We no longer need the media. We no longer want the media. This is a huge moment. This gives me some hope.
