Welcome home.
Twas the Eucharist what done it.
During his 14 seasons in the NBA, Gordon Hayward played for teams in Utah, Boston, Charlotte and Oklahoma City. He retired over the summer, now he is part of a new team and this one is universal. In a recent ceremony in Rome, Hayward joined the Catholic Church. Archbishop Timothy Broglio administered Confirmation and First Holy Communion. Hayward’s wife is Catholic and one of their children just received her own First Communion. Hayward chose the Confirmation name Sebastian after Saint Sebastian, the patron saint of athletes. Gordon Hayward joins to tell us a little more about his faith journey and why he joined the Catholic Church. On social media he posted a Latin phrase, “Nunc Coepi” meaning “Now I begin.” Hayward discusses what he meant by that. He explains why he chose Saint Sebastian as his Confirmation saint.

America has a problem with celebrity worship. The Church should not. We should be glad to welcome him into the Church, of course, but without regard to his NBA career. Not only would it be irrational to do otherwise, it has a bad track record. We’ve been burned before by celebrities converting, receiving exaggerated praise, and then falling away.
