I spoke with Father Andrzej Zglejszewski Director of the Office of Worship for the Diocese of Rockville Centre today regarding the availability of the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite in the diocese following Summorum Pontificum.
Father confirmed for me that in addition the the longstanding regular weekly ‘Latin Mass’ in Uniondale at the St Pius X, the extraordinary form of the Roman rite will also be available at St. Matthews in Dix Hills and the formerly once a month TLM at Sacred Heart in Cutchogue will become a weekly event starting the first Sunday in October. This is good news.

It’s not enough. The Diocese of Rockville Centre is one of the largest in the nation. Long Island is over 100 miles long. Do I want to drive 45 minutes to Uniondale (Pius X) or two hours to Cutchogue, or an hour and a half to Dix Hills? NO. I do not. We just got off the phone with them as well. Apparently you can request the Tridentine Mass from your local parish, but it has to be “a sufficient amount” of people to have it even considered. Did the Bishop make this known? NO. He did not. He does not want any more trads littering up his diocese with their pieties. So, as far as DRVC goes, it’s the same old liberal line of close your eyes and maybe they’ll go away. Well, they have that right. I’ll go away. And I’ll take my generous Bishop’s Appeal money with me.

Hello,
I am one of the people involved in the schola cantorum that sings at St. Matthew (Dix Hills).
Soon after the promulgation of Summorum Pontificum, Fr. McCartney (the current pastor) asked parishioners to write letters to him to express the desire to have the extraordinary form celebrated at the parish. Today was the first Sunday Mass celebrated according to the Missal of Bl. John XXIII (Low Mass with Latin hymnody). Fr. McCartney attended in choro (I believe that is the term).
We will be moving toward a Sung Mass as the norm in the near future. The schola cantorum, having sung the full propers within the context of the Mass of Paul VI, is completely prepared for this development.
To our anonymous blogger – the schola could use your donation. Offering the Tridentine Mass is one thing. Offering it well is another thing entirely.

Aristotle,
I’m not the anonymous poster, but I’d be happy to make a donation to the Tridentine Mass in Dix Hills. Let me know what you need.
