I’ve posted a number of short pieces on the St. Michael the Archangel Church now under construction in Leawood, KS over the last few days, and there will be more. I just wanted to show you the design the architect, David Meleca, originally came up with until that pesky thing called the budget came into play. Still came out well in the final simplified design that has been shown so far, but the images below prove that design skill is certainly out there if the budgets can be found. Lovely, inspiring. One hopes the interior would have been as well thought out (i.e., not a “thrust” sanctuary) as this exterior.

Beautiful, do you know how much its costing? My home parish is building a new church. unfortunately, they have a circular plan out. If there were reasonable options for the more traditional style, it might make a difference.

a friend of mine who is a parishioner at St. Michael’s tells me that the budget was 12 million but has now increased to 14 million (and I presume that for the simpler design). The school was built first (and I believe it is at capacity); the parish currently worships in what I presume will become the gymnasium when the church is built.

This design here was the first sketch the architect did, and it at the “dream” stage of the project. The simplified church (which is still quite rich by today’s standards) did come in at around 14 million plus if I recall, but that also includes a fully furnished parish hall and offices in the lower level. Its a big building, so cost per square foot is pretty reasonable.
