Before my time as well, but I used to watch Dragnet re-runs on Nickelodeon. Great clip! I miss having those old shows re-run….much better than about 98% of what's on TV now.
Hey Craig… I thought Obama was also part white… so what if they're talking to his "white half"???
Nothing will change when people keep insisting race has something to do with those of us that can't stand Obama. Yeppers… I wish people would understand I (and many like me) don't give a patooie as to the color of a person's skin, but rather the CONTENT OF THEIR CHARACTER.
Memory Lane–used to watch Dragnet–always an excellent show, timeless.
They don't make them like that anymore–now its all liberal brainwashing in the movies, on TV in the news reports.
Thanks for the breath of fresh ( although from the 50's) air.
Praise to the person that put it together.
Wouldn't it be nice to hear a politician talk that way–and mean it?
Craig, assuming we'll both make it to the time you're 94 what will be your reaction if I push you into a grave and start shoveling in the dirt? After all, at that age it won't be "terribly out of the realm" to assume you're dead!
Checking facts before shooting off your mouth never hurts.
I have accepted the fact that I was wrong about your beloved Harry Morgan, why can't you?
"Checking facts before shooting off your mouth never hurts."
Truer words were never spoken.
It's just a fact that we should NOT be happy that we are ranked #37 in the world in healthcare and pay about twice as much as the 36 countries that do better at healthcare than we do.
It's just a fact that we should NOT be happy with the fact that we have the highest infant mortality rate of any industrialized nation.
It's just a fact that we should NOT be happy with the fact that 70% of personal bankruptcies are due to healthcare costs.
It's just a fact that trying to pass a healthcare bill through Congress is NOT trying to build a new country, but trying to make the old one work.
And, finally, it's just a fact that there will never, ever be a shortage of angry old white guys trying to tell people to sit down and STFU.
For the better part of the '90's I lived in a low income neighborhood in New London, CT. My friends were for the most part unemployed due to their being HIV positive. These folks routinely used the ER whenever they had a sniffle (a compromised immune system will make ya do that). It was the ONLY form of health care they had.
It worked really well too. Medicaid paid for a daily drug cocktail that would put you or I into the poorhouse. The much ballyhooed wait of hours in the ER didn't exist at the hospital they used (and my oldest son had been born in that same facility back in 1984, it was no roach hotel) and all in all their healthcare needs were well met.
Using the ER was so attractive, a former girlfriend (non HIV positive) routinely used it for her kid's needs. She herself chose not to be gainfully employed whilst working towards her doctorate in Political Science. No problems for her either regarding substandard care, long waits, etc.
Former Speaker of the House, "Tip" O'Neil used to say that all politics are local. Taking that mindset and applying it to most of life's issues has taught this exasperated (not angry) older white guy that life is never as bad an anyone might make it seem. That applies to those on the right side of the political aisle also.
The "facts" you cite (with no corresponding source) remind me of a saying attributed to Mark Twain, "There are lies, damned lies and statistics."
As to your anecdotes regarding the use of the ER, that is exactly the point of healthcare reform. ER treatment for illnesses is by far the most expensive and wasteful use our precious medical resources. Denying millions of people access to regular medical care results in pissing away billions of dollars that could be better spent.
Every other industrialized country on the planet but ours has figured that out.
Craig, why does reform of the healthcare system have to entail government running the show? You cite the examples of other countries, how about Canada where their natives will cross the border to get expeditious treatment here rather than wait for their own beauracracy to grind into action? It's anecdotal but here is one story; http://inthecrease.blogspot.com/2009/09/obamacare-versus-nobamacare.html
As for anecdotes, heres another one for ya. My cousin lives in Ireland where socialized medicine is readily available. He was able to have a routine procedure done in just under two weeks, thanks to keeping himself privately insured. His neighbor down the street waited six months for the same procedure. HE was under the national system.
Government run health care is always inefficent and unresponsive to the needs of the general populace. Just look to the Soviet Union where life expectancy actually declined during the time of completely socialized medicine. FWIW, that was cited in US News & World Report in 1976. I never expected to be in a discussion thirty years later on the topic so I'm unable to cite the particular issue of that magazine.
I'll grant there are problems with our current system, but allowing the government to take over is equivalent to throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
Furthermore, there is currently no proposed change of the system that doesn't allow for the public funding of abortion. Since I'm a practicing Catholic that kills the deal right from Jump Street. I see no reason why my tax dollars should be used to subsidize murder for the sake of convenience.

Nice. I want to see whatever original movie the clips are from..

And a quick IMDB search reveals it's from Dragnet.. before my time so I didn't recognise it. I think I'd like it though!

Yep. Two old (in this case, dead)white guys trying to tell an "uppity" black american what to do.
As you say, Mr. Archbold, nothing ever changes!

If you delete the irrelevant words "white" and "black", and replace "uppity" with "pro-death", then I'll readily agree with you.
As you say, Mr. Archbold, nothing ever changes!
True. Race-baiting (and other sub-species of) trolls will always be among us, until Our Blessed Lord comes again in glory… 🙂

Minor point but Harry Morgan (the white haired one) is still alive and kicking. You'd think trolls could get SOMETHING right!

I'm nearing 40 next month and I knew it was Dragnet . . . and saw it when I was a kid . . . long long time ago
This was brilliant!
September 7, 2009 at 10:14 pm
Subvet,
Considering Harry Morgan is 94 years old and hasn't been seen on TV/movies since 2002, it wasn't terribly out of the realm to assume he was dead.
Dragnet was an awesome show, my apologies to those of you in the Harry Morgan fan club.
Also,Jack Webb never said "Just the facts, ma'am".
September 7, 2009 at 10:34 pm
Also, since we're talking about facts being wrong, the USA hasn't existed for 400 years.

Wait. Harry Morgan is responsible for our healthcare system?
Does it have something to do with MASH?
