From the “what were they thinking?” file. Surely we can do better than those day-glo panels in the sanctuary. They make the altar, the image of Christ, look downright dull. Oh, wait. The altar is lit up too!

Wow, that is really bad. They could have done ALOT better than that with the amount of money they had to spend. YUCK!

Good heavens but that is ugly.

Looks good to me, with the exception of the blue screen thing. Nicely done, Perth.

Turtles??? Wait a second…Did I see turtles??? Offspring, Jellyman type Turtles?!?!
Those Bishops might not be best under the altar, when they roll over in their graves goodness knows what's going to happen to that "Knights of the Round Table" altar they've got going on!!!

As a member of the Archdiocese of Perth, can I appeal to the good people of CMR to allow us to enjoy our renewed Cathedral, day-glo and all. Our past Bishops will not be spinning in their graves but, we hope, heartened to see a healthy vibrant Catholic community at the (literal) margin of Australia – look us up on a map. We are the envy of the rest of Australia, having the greatest number of priestly vocations and two seminaries. Our archdiocese has recently given birth to a new women's religious institute (check them out at http://www.mg.org.au). Our Archbishop is a wonderful pastor and should be congratulated on bringing the Catholic cathedral of Perth to the centre stage of the landscape of our City. Heaven knows we need it. God bless.

It is quite disgusting. I saw him talk about the people attending the "services" and how it tries to caters to everybody,,, Everybody that is except God.
The once great Cathedral a church for the worship of God has been reduced to a very protestant theme of community building.

It is true that Abp Barry Hickey is a magnificent, orthodox bishop. He is beloved of the people and has taken many young, theologically healthy priests under his wing.
However, none of this changes the fact that this cathedral is a travesty. If you could see what St Mary's looked like before, you would understand that they have essentially gutted the place of its neoclassical soul and merely kept the façade for heritage reasons (and to lend legitimacy to the monstrosity that's been tacked on). The renewal of the cathedral had the potential to be a glorious resurrection of a truly Catholic identity in architecture, instead St Mary's has been sacrificed on the altar of outdated 1990s fashions.

Oh, my! They only showed a brief clip, but those stations of the cross are the most terrifying.

"Adapted to the liturgy of the times…" Indeed, what were they thinking!

When I saw the altar, what occurred to me is that if you add a lazy susan, that's basically the table my (many-sibling-ed) family was seated at in every Chinese restaurant.
I'm not out and out opposed to modern architecture, but I don't know if this change is as wonderful as they think.

There is no way this could be called a restoration. The only positive I could find is the fact that they actually have a rehersal room so that, hopefully, people will be able to pray before Mass.

So much money for so little! It looks funky and out-of-date even before it's complete. Do these poor misguided "churchpeople" actually believe that future generations will find this beautiful?

Yet another reason to dismiss the Aussies.

Horrendous. Are these people aware of the currents within the Church? They should have leveled the great cathedral and started over rather than contaminating it with such inconsistent "add-ons."
