A lot of people have heard of the vocations boom among Dominican sisters, especially the communities in Nashville and Ann Arbor. Even Oprah knows about the Ann Arbor sisters. But the “eastern” province of Dominican Friars, officially the Province of St. Joseph, has been having a quiet renaissance of late as well. 21 novices entered last summer. This video, with its serious content and joyful tone, shows why men are flocking to the Dominican Order.

The novitate is based in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Dominicans have control over St. Gertude Parish to which the priory is attached. St. Gertrude and the priory's chapel are the focal points of the video.
To give you an example of why the province is flourishing . . . most the priests preside over and the novices take part in the parish's 11:30am weekday Mass. The liturgy is always beautiful (with the novices doing chant) and the preaching is always spell binding.
Oh, and the Mass is always packed with parishoners and non-parishoners alike.
St. Gertrude is one of the sweet gems of Cincinnati Catholicism.

I love Dominicans!
The priest speaking at the very beginning of the video, Fr. Brian Mulcahy, O.P., is the Provincial Prior of the Dominican Province of St. Joseph. 7 years ago, when he was pastor at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Charlottesville, Virginia, Fr. Brian brought my wife and me into the Catholic Church.
In addition, my 9-year-old son wants to be a Dominican priest.

I love the Dominicans too. I was struck by the belt that was put on the Friar with the Rosary attached. The Dominican Sisters in Nashville told me that Dominic placed the Rosary on his left side, just as a Knight placed his sword there. Dominic said the Rosary was the greatest weapon against the Devil. Having become closer to Our Lady this past year, and seeing miracles in the darkness of the world, I have to say that is correct. It brings me to tears. Anonymous, I will pray for your vocation. Be a warrior for Christ.

By the way, in addition to outstanding liturgies and providing an orthodox Catholic presence at the University of Virginia, here is what the Dominicans in Charlottesville are up to these days.

Excellent video! I was a parishioner at St. Gertrude's for about a year in the late 90's. Gosh, has Fr. Sullivan lost his Boston accent (or was he just being careful for the video)? Being from the Boston area myself I well remember the first time I heard him say mass- I felt like I was back home again.

It was an excellent video. Father Sullivan was recently the pastor at St. Louis Bertrand in Louisville, KY. I hated to see him leave but see that he is doing wonderful work for the Dominican Order.
