Dear 1%: We want the same health coverage that the politicians get from the president on down, the people paid for it, the same retirement benefits, the same pay, the same jet planes, the same buyouts, the same stimulus packages, the people paid for it, the people ought to have it. but the people want more than anything else is truth in government and honesty and decency, not lies, corruption and betrayal=treason.
I'll agree, it's likely that a lot of the participants don't really know why they are there or what they want to accomplish, but it's hard for anyone in this country not to be bothered, alarmed, or puking sick (take your pick) about the influence of corporate money in elections and the political process. It's sick-making. Will "occupying" places change anything (there's a sad little contingent occupying a downtown park in our smallish college town)? I don't know, but I do know that every vote for an office above the level of dog catcher feels like a waste of time to me. And I am a Catholic (re-vert after 20 years wandering in the depressing, smoggy wasteland of relativism and liberalism), albeit one who votes largely just because Blessed John Paul II said I still have an obligation to do so.
I'm sorry, am I the idiot, or was your remark directed at Mr. Archbold or someone else? If it was intended for me, thank you, I'm aware of the fact. Mr. Archbold is married, so he's probably aware, as well.
Occupy Wall Street: people who believe that just because they have no knowledge whatsoever of economics, doesn't mean they can't try to hold the entire economic system hostage. I can actually think of many good reasons for civil disobedience, or even violent uprising, but "we sorta heard vaguely bad things about business, like from movies and stuff, and we want that stuff to like, get better, and stuff" is not one of them.
Not one of them can define capitalism, or socialism for that matter—nor can tell you the one part of capitalism that's actually objectionable. Not one of them is aware that the Sierra Club, Girl Scouts, and Apache Tribe are all examples of "corporate personhood". Not one of them actually knows if the rich "pay their fair share" (e.g., the 1% they all hate? yeah, they pay something like a third of all taxes). And not one of them has ever stopped to ask what other agendas their nonsense is serving.
PS. @Midday, corporate/business influence in politics is not an impediment to voting, it is a direct effect of it. Elective government automatically makes "ability to buy ads in an election year" the foundation of political power, as the Ancient Romans made military service.

It's not what they're for, it's what they're against. Government and corporate corruption that's screwing up our economy and screwing over the People.
