I think this looks amazing. Sure, it'll poke fun at the Church but it also just seems like an excellent character study of a human person…who happens to be Pope. I'll see it.
I'd see it! It looks pretty interesting. Wasn't Pope Benedict pretty nervous about being selected? Or was that BPJPII… one of them supposedly put their head down on the table after they realized they'd been selected.
I mean, who WOULD want this position, knowing how so very hard it truly is on the human level? But yet they show such a deep level of humble service to do the will of the Holy Spirit. I think this movie would show a quirky, funny "what-if" scenario. I think it'll be pretty fun to watch as long as it doesn't devolve into issues of which I'd have a hard time reconciling with a man of God that goes undercover to hide his "Popeness"… like if they show him and a nun starting to flirt and getting it on or something stupid like that. Keep him pure, but with stage fright of being a Pope.
It looks cute. Setting aside the fact that in reality, a cardinal can decline to assume the papacy if elected, I hope overall it's a respectful and good-natured film.
Dirtdartwife brings up an interesting question. I always wondered what was going through Benedict's head when he went out on that balcony (he does discuss his emotions during the election in "Light of the World.")
It seems to me that as a naturally humble and shy man, he seemed uncomfortable with waving at crowds and making public appearances, but he does it out of a sense of duty and respect for his office. JP2 seemed much more comfortable with the attention.
Sure, the college of cardinals would elect a neurotic basket-case who can't appear in public. That's how you get to be so popular among your compadres, you know, all the running and the weeping.
I suppose that's how people would like to think of the Papacy. Goofy. Avuncular. Just wanting to be one of us, but sadly imprisoned in Prada loafers. Ride the subway! Let the common man heal you! Let the atheist psychologist show you your true self!
Surely as cardinal, bishop, priest he would have had to give lectures and homilies to large crowds. I can't imagine someone getting this far without having dealt with such a problem. So, to me it seems ridiculous.
Roman Holiday with Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn. Mike is correct. A priest says Mass for every person everyday, gives homilies when he does not feel like it and learns to love the people he serves. The Pope is a Servant of the Servants of God. @Blackrep: "Let the atheist psychologist show you your true self!" The atheist psychologist will fix everything.
There have been Popes who were not secular clergy, but various kinds of monk, and some of them absolutely hated the job. The fact you have to deal with people may well have been a factor in that.
There was one pope who actually resigned. He was a monk, and resigned in humility and his resignation was accepted. There is no coercion there. I believe this is the monk Sophia's Favorite is talking about.
Movie producers who have no idea about humility, service and love for Holy Mother Church haven't the vaguest idea about what they write. What concerns me is that there will always and forever be an insinuation of their own ideology, in subliminal messaging to the audience and it most definitely will be anti-Christ. I would see the movie only to critique it and set the message straight. Alas, it kills me to give them one cent of my money.
I have watch the trailer several times and I find the portrayal of the cardinals as non-serviams disgusting. The portrayal of the cardinals as unenthusiatic, actually retards, has no bearance to reality. Tell that to Cardinal Dolan. Maybe the movie is made to take Cardinal Dolan down. The personality of Cardinal Melville, chosen to be Pope contradicts itself, as Melville is portrayed as a psycopath and a psycopath would never be elected Pope as thei College of Cardinals would know him for what he is. The Pope who resigned after four months in office of Pope was chosen for his humility. The movie trailer is cutesy, but I found no vestige of humility, only the hierarchy of the Church being a bunch of crazy old men. I reserve the right to be crazy FOR Holy Mother Church, not against HER.
Some years ago I read a novel (whose title I unfortunately cannot remember, and using Google isn't helping me find it) about a British-born cardinal's rise to prominence in the Church despite having a speech impediment (stutter) and more serious skeletons in his closet.
The novel (SPOILER ALERT) ends with his being elected pope — but refusing to take the office because of his unworthiness. It's driving me nuts that I can't remember the name of this book; anyone else recall it?

Well, the reviews are actually in…32% on Rotten Tomatoes for being too…nice.

I'll see it if it gets a thumbs up from my favorite Papa.

I think it looks funny. Pope with "stage fright". Tell me you don't see humor there.

In 1986 there was a movie of similar theme called "Saving Grace"

I give this trailer five barfs.

Looks like a stupid copy of the magnificent film, "The Madness of King George." I'll pass, & I'm a Protestant.

The Italian writer/director is a famous cashmere communist who hasn't had a good idea in years. Save your money.

Mr. DiPippo: "cashmere communist"– what an excellent description.

On the other hand, this movie does look stupid.

I'd watch it. It looks like it might actually be cute and funny.
