Conservative commentator Ann Coulter came to speak at the University of Notre Dame. So horrified were some that they protested outside the event. But who they protested with is just a tad ironic.
The student newspaper reports this precious nugget:
Sophomore and College Democrats secretary Michelle McCarthy said her opposition to Coulter’s visit stems from Coulter’s “vitriolic language” that offends many minority groups.
“She engages in very hateful rhetoric that is offensive to a lot of people and groups, and I don’t think that she … is an expert on policy or really involved in actual governing,” McCarthy said. “She’s a political pundit who gets a lot of attention because she is very offensive and that creates media frenzy.”
“Our opposition to her isn’t partisan, it’s about human decency,” she said.
Wednesday, members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NCAAP) of Notre Dame and other student groups staged a silent demonstration outside of South Dining Hall to raise awareness for the effects of Coulter’s “hate speech,” NCAAP of Notre Dame president and junior Niciah Petrovic said.
So to protest Coulter’s hateful speech, they stood with student representatives of the pro-abortion rights NAACP?
Yeah, excuse me if I can’t really take your argument seriously. Because we all know the NAACP never engages in hyperbole, right? They are pure, high minded intellectuals who don’t use incendiary verbiage to make a point, right?
Hey, remember when the NAACP last year said that the DOJ and Secret Service should investigate the rodeo clown that wore an Obama mask? Remember they called it a “hate crime?”
Hey, also please recall with me when Chairman emeritus of the NAACP, Julian Bond, said the tea party was “overtly racist” and called it the “Taliban wing of American politics.”
Good times. Good times.
Or how ’bout when North Carolina NAACP leader, Reverend William Barber, attacked black conservatives by saying the GOP uses “people of color” as “mouthpieces.”
I could go on. In fact, hey, why not.
The NAACP has invited anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan and radical America-hating Marxist Jeremiah Wright to speak at their events.
So forgive me if I can’t take too seriously, members of the NAACP coming out against hateful rhetoric.

Coulter is becoming increasingly bizarre and increasingly irrelevant. With every passing year, her credibility and stature decline, a natural reflection of her bizarre behavior and conflicted ideology. We should Never Trust Ann Coulter – at ANY Age, see http://www.coulterwatch.com/never.pdf.

Well, Notre Dame is no longer Catholic, but merely the Bracton College division of the N.I.C.E.

Im all for protesting peacefully. THe bigger point is that a campus should permit anyone to speak. Teaching and learning require all perspectives. Peaceful protests for Coulter, like Obama who gave a commencement there are all healthy for dialogue. The part I dont like is suppressing free dialogue with name calling, hyperbole and other comments designed to supress opposing ideas rather than engage in it. Now if any of what I said were to actually occur, it might be nice. But the political left and right have become so anti-intellectual that we are reduced to suppress opposing speech via name calling and platitudes.

Coulter can be pretty crass, even if I agree with her politics. I believe she has the freedom to say her mind, but I do wish she wasn't so abrasive.
