Pew Research reports that a majority of Americans do not support the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Here’s their headline:
About seven-in-ten Americans oppose overturning Roe v. Wade
Sorta’ dispiriting, right?
But hold on. The question they say they ask seems a bit loaded to me and designed to get a specific response. Pew reportedly asked, “Would you like to see the Supreme Court completely overturn Roe v. Wade?”
Completely overturn? I wonder how would asking about simply “overturning” Roe differ from “completely overturning?” That verbiage is there to get a response. The folks at Pew are good at their jobs. They don’t add words to a question by chance or mistake.
I strongly suspect an agenda at work.
Secondly, I’m not sure if people realize that “completely overturning” Roe would not make abortion illegal throughout the country. Instead, it would allow states the jurisdiction to decide whether or not to allow abortion unrestricted.
In fact, only a few states have passed legislation stating that should Roe be overturned then abortion would be illegal there including Louisiana, Mississippi, North Dakota and South Dakota. Other states have passed restrictions should Roe be overturned but not outright bans.
But the poll question didn’t go for facts. Just hyperbolic questions.
I believe the word choice in the poll question is absolutely intended to lead responders to believe that abortion would be COMPLETELY illegal if Roe were COMPLETELY OVERTURNED!!!
Why not ask if folks support restricting abortion? Hmmm, something tells me they’d get a COMPLETELY different response.
