This would be a disaster.
Democrats, unhappy with the slight conservative tilt in the high court, are preparing to introduce legislation to add four seats to the US Supreme Court.
Four!
The bill is reportedly expected to be introduced in both the House and Senate Thursday morning at a press conference on the steps of the court.
Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey, a co-sponsor of the bill, reportedly said that adding justices “will shore up the public’s confidence in the court and its legitimacy in the public’s eyes.”
That, of course, is the opposite of truth. The Democrats hold the executive branch and the legislative branch. They do not have a majority on the court so they are seeking to change that without waiting for someone to die or retire. For the past few decades, Democrats have used the court to push through issues that would’ve been better left to the legislature such as abortion and gay marriage. This has been their go-to method of enforcing their agenda.
New York Rep. Mondaire Jones said, “Our democracy is under assault, and the Supreme Court has dealt the sharpest blows. To restore power to the people, we must #ExpandTheCourt.”
He means restore power to the Democrat Party, of course.
This would be a massive setback to the pro-life movement which has worked diligently over decades to urge Republican presidents to nominate judges who would respect the Constitution and life.
President Biden recently signed an executive order creating a commission that would study the “pros and cons” of expanding the court. In a actuality that just means Biden offered it up as a trial balloon.
Republicans should fight this with everything they have. In reality, they’ll probably mumble and groan and then agree to add two justices and the claim victory because they talked the Democrats down from four. And then they’ll send out a fundraising email on how conservatives have to take back the court.
