Remember when the rates of non-binary youths were skyrocketing. Yeah. You do. Well, that wave has ebbed. Big time.
You remember headlines like this one: Nearly 30% of Gen Z adults identify as LGBTQ.
Well, the times they are a changing.
This new report has huge implications for our society and our children’s future. It’s about the shifting landscape of gender identity among our youth, specifically, the encouraging decline in non-binary and transgender identification among college students, as revealed by a recent study. Professor Eric Kaufmann, a respected academic voice, has scrutinized the latest FIRE surveys and data from elite colleges, and what he’s found is nothing short of remarkable.
Between 2022 and 2023, around 6.8% of college students identified as non-binary or as something other than the traditional male or female. That’s a significant chunk of our young people, caught up in what many now recognize as a social contagion; a kind of cultural phenomenon that’s spread rapidly through schools, social media, and peer groups. But here’s the kicker: by 2025, that number has plummeted to just 3.6%. That’s nearly a 50% drop in a mere two years. This isn’t just a statistical blip; it’s a clear sign that the tide may be turning.
A new survey of 68,000 college students confirms what Kaufmann’s analysis suggests: only 3.6% now identify as anything other than male or female. This sharp decline among Generation Z is a positive sign, a sign that perhaps the social pressures and the relentless push for gender fluidity are beginning to lose their grip. Now, I know some will say, “Well, this is just a phase,” or “People need to find themselves.” But what we’re really witnessing is a cultural correction; a moment when young people are starting to see through the manufactured identities and the ideological agendas that have been pushed on them.
The sad news is that they’re not reporting being more religious…yet. That might be on us. We have to do a better job of being heard on this in a faithful manner. It’s not enough to convince young people that sex is binary. We are called to explain that God created us man and woman. Onward.
