The Politico reports:
An aide to Rep. Bart Stupak (D. Mich.) coordinated opposition to a Senate compromise on the place of abortion in health care legislation this morning with the Republican Senate leadership, the Conference Catholic Bishops, and other anti-abortion groups, according to a chain of frantic emails obtained this morning by POLITICO.
The emails show that Stupak — who has so far remained silent on language accepted by Senator Ben Nelson (D. Neb.) and faces intense pressure from the White House to accept it — is already working behind the scenes to oppose the compromise.
They also demonstrate a previously unseen degree of coordination between Stupak and the office of Republican leader Mitch McConnell.
Stupak would have to get a good number of Democrats to stand with him and at this point I’ll admit my faith is shaken on pro-life Democrats. But Stupak could still put an end to this lunacy. Not looking good but some small hope remains.
Hot Air has more on Stupak and on how the numbers shake down.

The Catholic Bishops have taken an interesting position – opposing the Nelson deal but that it is a matter of "judgment" and thanking Casey and Nelson for their "good-faith" efforts.
This position probably keeps them in the game so when the bill goes to conference they can push it closer to Stupak. Luv 'em or hate 'em, I wonder if when the game is all over, the Catholic Bishops will be the biggest winners — mandatory national health insurance with 90% or better of what they wanted on pro-life.
Needless to say the abortion lobby is steaming as much as NRTLC is. Howard Dean and Mirch McConnell both unhappy. Only the guys wearing the miters.

Let's hope Stupak's isn't the only spine in Government.
