Wow. This is just stupid. Really stupid. Really really stupid.
How could they think that replacing the body and blood of Jesus with Doritos and Pepsi (even if symbolically since it doesn’t seem like a Catholic Church) is a good way to sell product?
It offends because it trivializes an important religious ritual, but it also offends in that these morons actually think this would work.

Doritos and Pepsi…they will stoop as low as they think will work.

In his Book of Bebb, Frederick Buechner uses the image of potato chips and Coke (or some drink like that) as the Lord's Supper, as it is frequently called in protestant churches. Recently, a dear friend (who is protestant) told me that she feels Jesus just as much when she is chewing gum. Frankly, my prayer right then is, Father, forgive them. They don't know what they are doing. And literally, as offensive as it is to us (and to Him, I'm sure), there is a sense in which they really don't get it. Or they would be Catholic:-). I now am, mostly – far beyond anything else – because of the Eucharist.

This is appalling. They covered all the Christian bases –Roman collars and Protestant distribution method. I don't care if the Eucharist is symbolic for Protestants, it is a sacred symbol and this is mockery and profound disrespect.
@ Sue On your friend's experience chewing gum –of course there is no special feeling. But no Catholic who has received the Eucharist with faith for years could say that.

I am Catholic and am not offended. It's not mocking the Church nor the Real Presence. It's just a simplistic parody of Communion. What disturbs me more is that the company would not have the balls to do a similar sort of parody involving anything pertaining to Islam. How about a big Doritos logo on the walls of the Kaaba or Pepsi drink stations along the pilgrimage route? The company doesn't have the guts to parody Islam the way it parodied Catholicism.

I just called Pepsico. They say it is not their ad, that it is a "suggested ad created by a consumer." I said that the ad uses the Pepsico name and therefore the company should take action.

Being offended here is a good thing!

Now, now, let's remember the Mel Gibson protocol and acknowledge the creativity.

The ad is offensive on many levels, but I think this one is worse:

UGH. Double UGH. And I'm vegan.

Saint Clement's Catholic Church in Chicago used to have corn-bread hosts. I was there, I had one, I've never been back.

and a Protestant style church. Can't wait to see how Pepsico handles Judaism, Islam, Hindus, etc in future adverts

There was a movie titled "Scanners" some years back where victims were killed by telekinetically jacking their blood pressure up until their heads would explode.
I'm starting to feel like I'm in that flick.

I wasn't listening carefully at first and thought the woman asked,"Where's the Pepsi Mass?" At a typical Modernism children's Mass yesterday, the children gathered around the Altar during the consecration. After Mass,Saint Nicholas sat in front of the Tabernacle and parents took photos while he gave out chocolate bars which some ate right there in the sanctuary? But I saw a priest at another Modernism church drink coffee and donuts as he sat in front of the tabernacle and the deacon and music minister drink coffee in the pews. t So, drink Coca cola. They have a much better commercial with music by "Train."
December 6, 2010 at 7:05 pm
Since it's a Protestant communion (Catholics don't do the cups and tray bit) I'm not offended.
December 6, 2010 at 7:25 pm
I wonder, which church (whether Catholic or not) allowed someone to make this commercial on site? Since it's an ad "by a consumer" then we're not talking about a Hollywood set.
December 6, 2010 at 9:06 pm
Its kind of funny we have great swaths of Americans who seem to thrive on being 'offended', the apology industry is neck in neck with the 'demanding an apology' industry. To be honest my ears have grown deaf to the cries of both feigned and real offense taken. Get over it, say the Serenity Prayer and build you own spirit. Heavenly Father, how much longer on this earth?

No Sue, we couldn't be Catholic. Our problem with your religion is that Matthew 16:9 was taken to mean something that it does not say. Popes made whatever laws they wanted to. Just like the Pharisees or Jesus' time, we feel that your religion has taken tradition and the laws of men and replaced Jesus.
If you think that someone is saved because they believe a certain church doctrine, but not if they repent and cry out to Jesus to save them. Well Sue, I'm sorry but you are the one not getting it.
Also, what your friend said was silly.
Many people in Catholicism are true followers of Jesus. Many are not. Many in protestant churches are true followers of Jesus. Many are not.
Matthew 7:22-23 should make all believers, both Catholics and Protestants do a serious check of themselves.
I love you.

And this commercial was in the poorest of taste, but I'm not surprised. We live in an evil world where people hate our Lord and us.

Sick, it will not sell anything.
Let's all Drink Dr Pepper and eat tortillas.

"If you think that someone is saved because they believe a certain church doctrine, but not if they repent and cry out to Jesus to save them. Well Sue, I'm sorry but you are the one not getting it."
Matt, since you're a person who get's it, I'd ask you to please not judge the Catholic Church based on what other people tell you it teaches. "[S]omeone is saved because they believe a certain church doctrine" has never been a teaching of the Catholic Church.
If you want to know what Catholics believe pick up a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. I don't know of any church who makes it easier to find out what they believe – everything is summarized in one reference book.
P.S. Did you mean Matthew 16:9 or Matthew 16:19?
