The pop star who became a former pop star when she ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul II on Saturday Night Live, Sinead O’Connor is now reportedly going after Pope Francis and saying that the Church is doomed and the papacy is anti-Christian. I know how heartbreaking this must be for Catholics who so look to former pop stars for spiritual advice.
“I guess I wish everyone the very best, I don’t know very much about [Francis] so I’m not going to rush to judge him . . . but I would say he has a scientifically impossible task because all religion, but certainly the Catholic Church, is really a house built on sand, and it’s drowning in a sea of conditional love, and therefore it can’t survive,” she said
“The office of pope itself is an anti-Christian office. The idea that Christ needs a representative is laughable and blasphemous . . . . we need to rescue God from religion, all religion. They’ve become a smokescreen.”

Nothing like using metaphors that you wouldn't know if it weren't for the Catholic Church to attack the Catholic Church.
Sinead, the Church has survived for nearly 2000 years. I'm pretty certain it'll outlast you (at least, here on Earth. Hopefully you'll be with God in Heaven for all eternity.)
Too many people don't understand what unconditional love really is. It's not acceptance of all behavior. It's not tolerating sin. It's loving someone enough to tell them "what you're doing is harmful to your eternal soul". It's loving someone so much that you want them to get to Heaven, and are willing to take steps to help them get there. Affirming someone in their sin is not "love".

Well of course she doesn't. I'd be very surprised if she did.

Why bother with this has-been of a singer and her views on Pope Francis and the Church in general. It is a waste of time and space. Instead of talking about her why not instead mention and remind your readers that today is the 8th anniversary of the election of the Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI coming as it always does just a few days after his 86th birthday. Many seem to think that because he resigned its not even worth mentioning. It is because John Paul II's death anniversary was talked about recently. He is being treated as irrelevant now.

Sineade…Sineade…isn't that a nasal decongestant?
God bless our holy fathers Benedict and Francis, who pray for all of us daily.

Sinead is nuttier than a rat in an outhouse. The kindest thing is to just ignore the poor thing.

A translation of her statement was found…"please pay attention to me! I'm irrelevant and desparate. Pleeeeease. No one knows who I am. Bad press is better than none! Pay attention to me!"
Or something close to that. My four year old does the same thing.

LOL. As if God needs rescuing from anything! God loves us all unconditionally. The Church is here to teach us how to love Him back. And Jesus himself said, "If you love me, you will keep my commandments."

Sinead….who the he#! cares what she thinks….yikes!

"we need to rescue God from religion, all religion. They’ve become a smokescreen."
God is quite capable of rescuing Himself, if He wishes, and if He so wished, He would've done it already.
God needs us to rescue Him! WOW.

c'mon, y'all have taken her words out of context!
this quote came right after the Denver 420 pot rally. see, now, do you understand the 'smoke-screen!" oh, wait, maybe you do…..in that case…never mind…keep moving along, nothing to see here, keep moving ladies & gents, boys & girls…

If you have seen any other headlines about her (married, not married, married again – all with the same guy, over several weeks) I'm not sure she likes anyone anymore – especially herself.
April 22, 2013 at 1:45 pm
Really, who cares what Sinead thinks? Too much celebrity worship in our society.
April 22, 2013 at 3:01 pm
I had forgotten who she was. I didn't recognize the name until I read the article. Who cares what that Has Been thinks.
April 22, 2013 at 3:53 pm
Everyone who has commented on your statement, Sinead does love you, believe it or not. If we did not then we have chosen to ignore Jesus' command to love our enemies. We are not allowed to pick and choose from a menu of Christ's teachings.
April 22, 2013 at 4:06 pm
Sinead, then you're not a representative of Christ by your own stated principle. So what gives you the right to judge who is really pro-Christian or anti-Christian?
April 22, 2013 at 4:30 pm
Who cares what O'Connor says about the Church. I would think you have better things to report. Raise your sights Matt.

I find this to be extremely offensive since to be a "former pop star" one would had to have once been a "pop star." I do not believe there exists any convincing evidence of that.
