From the eminently huggable Mark Shea’s “Bed-wetting Reactionary Wusses…”
What ties everything in Reactionary culture together better than any other theory I’ve been able to come up with is that it’s not that Reactionaries think the Church is evangelizing wrong and want to do it better. It’s that they hate the whole idea of bringing new people into the Church at all (except for a vanishingly small sample of like-minded Reactionaries) and seem to be bent on making sure as few are allowed in and as many are driven away as possible.
I agree with Mark. Wouldn’t it be much better if all the Reactionary Wuss @ssholes in the Church who are not as open, loving, and tolerant as us would just get the the F out.
File this in the “irony is lost on them” department.

If only there were more humble apologists who could bring more people into the Church with their soft, accommodating tones. Indeed we need fewer people in the blogopshere who demonize their opponents, erect strawmen arguments, and condescendingly dismiss those with whom they disagree. Ah yes, if only.

Another misdirected rant by Mark Shea.

I thank the Lord every single day that, as a Traditionalist Catholic, I have never, ever, personally met any Catholic, of any "persuasion, who is as filled with hate as Mark Shea. It is truly impressive the amount of hatred the man carries within his heart.

Like the liberal media, Mr. Shea's screeds are simply bad for my blood pressure, and for my spiritual health.

Define "reactionary." And why is the term capitalized in the first post? Further, why all caps?

I agree that the word Reactionary is being overused by certain well known Catholic personalities. Just the day before I saw Jimmy Akin himself use this same uncharitable word. It is ironic that this Catholics are always talking about less clarity and more charity yet they won't practice it themselves. Pope Benedict called them by the term PROFESSIONAL CATHOLICS, from his interview in 2010. He said they make their living off their Catholicism but actually had very little real Faith.

LOL! Poor Mark! I know what he is saying but you nailed it – irony alert, indeed! He should get an editor. Matt, you two should probably proof read each other's stuff! Think of all the souls that would come flying out of Purgatory as you both offered it up!

I’ve never seen Catholics use the “R” word before. Only hardened Marxists and their fellow travellers have used it in the past.
The application is fairly consistent with their usage here, however.

"He should get an editor."

I need a pint of Guinness.

The whole reactionary bit seems to be making waves from the apologist Dave Armstrong who has been pushing this terminology for a while now. All a big game, perhaps along the lines of gossip?

Reason # 839 that Mr. Shea will issue another public apology while promising not to do what he has done repeatedly in the past and continues to do regularly in the present.

Mark is one who is floating around in the pink-cloud "Spirit" of Vatican II

the more I read Mark Shea, the more I'm convinced that he hates sincerely devout people. I also get the impression he would have a poop panic if the EF became the most popular or (in his case) the ordinary form of the Mass.

Reading these comments tells me more about the commentator than it does about Mark Shea.
September 22, 2013 at 2:58 pm
Yes Jim, the comments show that they rest of us have more Christian charity than Mark Shea.

You're mean.
Probably right, though….

Does any serious Catholic still read Mr Shea, other than for occasional comic relief?

The shockingly inaccurate "Christ has saved you" comment of Francis has apparently been lost on Shea, who quotes it with approval. Gee I thought we wouldn't find out whether we're saved until after we die, and we have to use the sacraments and Mass, and have faith and hope, etc. Christ has redeemed us; we hope we will be saved. But we need the Church and God's grace to be saved.
