There have been a lot of bishops throughout history ordained because , say, Ferdinand and Isabella wanted them , or the CCP state Catholic bishops today.
Sometimes looks like the only canon the Vatican ever fires is against the retrogrades.
It takes a lot sometimes to get to what the Magesterium is teaching, and what is infallible. One thing I am clear on is that, the authority to excommunicate ( also one-way, though some say comparing it to the heretic German bishops, is not one to one) is real.
So the SSPX ends up following excommunicated bishops. How that shakes out? I donno. I’m not dancing with them. It’s quite rough to obey a bishop in the things he has authority over. However, God has let me know that there’s no separating Christ and his Church. There’s nowhere else to go.
Joan of Arc said something similar before the bishops burned her at the stake, but she died a saint
