Novelist Stephen King recently insulted the troops by saying to a room full of children, “If you can read, you can walk into a job later on. If you don’t, then you’ve got the Army, Iraq, I don’t know, something like that. It’s not as bright.” The troops poked some fun back at King who I’m sure will take it snobbishly. They’ll go about saving the world while King will go back to writing about clowns eating children.

Must be a New England thing – didn’t John Kerry make a similar comment back in ’04 during the election campaign?

Yeah. I think he did. BUt it sort of figures because Kerry’s campaign was kind of a horror story.

I’m always amazed when “celebrities” make such stupid comments. You would think that the fact that they live off the good graces (and money) of John Q. Public would cause them to use a little restraint. I didn’t realize he said this to a room full of kids. What an a**hole (sorry, I couldn’t help it..)

His comment is elitist but it isn’t stupid.

The comment is elitist and stupid. My husband spent 5 years in the US Navy and we were stationed here and overseas and I know that what Mr. King said is not the least bit true.
To make such comments about something you have never been a part of and obviously do not understand is, well, stupid.

Elitist and Stupid. (Don’t the two go hand in hand)

Saving the world? In what way are they saving the world?
