I present to you as a gift the most ridiculous and just laughably bad attempt to slime the Catholic Church by The Politico in weeks.
But this attack on the Church is just so poorly done that I literally laughed out loud on reading it. You’ve got to check it out. The whole thing is ludicrous but you at least have to read the first two sentences. Here’s the first sentence:
Thirty-three years ago this fall, a bitter, race-tinged fight over abortion matched Roman Catholic bishops and the House against the nation’s first popularly elected black senator, Republican Ed Brooke of Massachusetts.
OK. So we can take from the first sentence that the Church is racist because it opposed the first popularly elected black Senator, right?
And since that’s the lede you’d expect the article would actually mention Brooke again. It doesn’t. Not once.
Note to The Politico: The lede of a story should kinda’ be indicative of where you’re going. If you mention a standoff between the Church and “THE FIRST POPULARLY ELECTED BLACK SENATOR” you should probably mention “THE FIRST POPULARLY ELECTED BLACK SENATOR” again, don’t you think?
You’d think The Politico would substantiate (even a little) that the debate over the Hyde Amendment was “race tinged.” It doesn’t. So, to make it clear, the first black Senator has nothing to do with this story as he’s never mentioned again and nowhere is his race brought into the story again.
Does The Politico name the color of every Senator it mentions? It doesn’t mention Senator Henry Hyde’s ghostly white pallor when referring to him. But let’s face it, the only reason the writer mentions Senator Brooke is so they can pit the Catholic Church against a black Senator to imply racism.
OK. So now let’s go to the second sentence. The second sentence has two points of information.
Now, with health care reform on the line, the same male-dominated church hierarchy is dictating to the first woman speaker of the House, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, a Catholic herself and past ally for the bishops on everything from human rights in China to tax credits for low-income families.
Gotta’ love the “male dominated hierarchy” dictating to the “first woman speaker.” Hey Politico, Nancy Pelosi called the bishops for their support. Are the bishops under some kind of command to do what Nancy Pelosi says? The bishops stood up against the healthcare plan because of its inclusion of federal funding of abortion. Pelosi changed the bill and called the bishops to gain their support. That’s hardly dictating.
And the second nugget of info in that sentence is that Saint Nancy is quite the wonderful Catholic who’s right in line with those mean traitorous bishops and has been their ally on everything…oh except little things like the legalized slaughter of 43 million unborn babies.
So, in short, the Catholic Church hates black people, hates women, and often turns on even the saintliest of its members. Not that any of that has anything to do with the story but I guess The Politico wants you to know that.

I'm surprise the article didn't mention Patrick Kennedy in it…

They'd have to mention him in glowing terms as well and that would've taken some of the spotlight off Saint Nancy, I think.

good grief! I read past the first 2 sentences, and came away thinking, again, "WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE (congress)." Do they really think the crisis of health care is that poor (and not-so-poor) women can't get policies that cover abortion???? This is making me crazy. So much momentum and energy is being wasted here. What was a real opprtunity to improve the lives of millions with true, sustainable, life-giving, reform is being squandered by those who think abortions should be covered more than elective cosmetic surgery. For heaven's sake, there are women who can't get reconstructive surgeries after mastectomies covered. And they insist that there is no reform without free abortions? I'm disgusted with these "leaders". Disgusted.

Hey, wouldn't the whole Stupak dilemma be solved for the Democrats if Planned Parenthood agreed to offer the "lifesaving and essential" service of abortion free of charge?
Wait for it…

This is not an aberration. This is the religion of Political Correctness in its purest form. Everyone is ranked on a scale based on their sex and skin color. White men are spawns of hell while black women are walking saints – everyone else falls somewhere in between. The intent of one's actions and the means used to accomplish them are meaningless. That's why Politico doesn't need to provide any evidence other than the fact that the bishops are old white men and the politicians they oppose aren't.

I'm actually rather disappointed in the Politico. No mention of how the Church is run by a bunch of homophobes? They're slipping.

I hope that at the next conclave (which I pray is years and years away) that the Cardinals elect an African Pope so we can put an end to this "Catholic-Church-as-racist" baloney. I know that I want this for all the wrong reasons, but it would have to shut some critics up. I mean, no journalist with even a shred of integrity would go so far as to call the Pope an Uncle Tom, right? Please let that be true…

Jonathan,
don't give them ideas.

"…race-tinged fight…"
Now what's that? One of those new leftist words? Seriously, that phrase has absolutely no meaning whatsoever, and only the libertine left could invent one for it.

Jonathan – The Roman Catholic church has already had 6 African popes. Granted, they were all before the 8th century, but at that point in time Africa was a hub of Western civilization (before the Mohammedan conquest cut it off from Europe).
I've never read the Politico. And I can't really find a reason to ever do so again. I don't know the percentages of ethnic breakdowns of all US bishops, but I do know first hand that they are comprised of people who's ethnic background is black, Asian, Latin and pretty much every stripe of European ancestry. Hardly an all-white country club, and very much a reflection of the ethnic background of the US itself. But I guess this wouldn't make the Politico's point any stronger.

Early Riser, it's more than just black, Asian, and Latino. How many bishops are descendants of a European culture which was commonly discriminated against in our past (for example the Irish). But Political Correctnes has no room for culture; it just judges people by their skin color (as if that's any more important than eye color or hair color) – it's an incredibly racist philosophy.

Jonathan, if an African is elected in the next conclave, I think he would be the third or fourth African pope. Again the Catholic Church shines as a beacon to all the world showing that the dignity of mankind transcends political and racist pettiness

Abortion really is the weirdest of holy grails. We're such a neurotic culture now. Instead of "A chicken in every pot," it's "An abortion in every stomach."
Are we going to get to the ten year old taking the obnoxious stand on gay marriage? (Not the stand itself as much as telling the teacher to shove it, refusing to pledge, and confusing America with the "racism and sexism" of the whole world).

Re: Nancy, she probably thinks, "Nothing ventured, nothing gained. So, she tries to see if our bishops can be manipulated. She unwittingly reinforces the stereotype."
Re: attacks on the Church, I wonder if we even need to dignify such absurdities with comments & replies. In my mind, they're paid by campaign contributions from Big Butcher and they would throw anything that would stick. To engage them in dialogue is an exercise of futility, insanity even – imho.

Brian Walden – I've noticed your posts to be particular provocative and at times obtuse. I said very specifically, "black, Asian, Latin and pretty much every stripe of European ancestry." "Every stripe" of course including the Irish, since they are still part of Europe last I checked. All you have to do is see the names Mahoney, O'Malley and Law in the news to see the US bishops are indeed well-represented (saturated?) with men of Irish decent. Since it was so painfully obvious to everyone else, I really didn't feel the need to call that out in my post.

Sorry Early Riser, I did not read your post carefully and I never meant anything against you personally.
