Wow! This is a brilliantly scathing response to Nancy Pelosi and her comments on Meet The Press Sunday concerning abortion. Here’s the amazing statement in full.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 26, 2008
STATEMENT OF HIS EMINENCE, EDWARD CARDINAL EGAN CONCERNING REMARKS MADE BY THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
Like many other citizens of this nation, I was shocked to learn that the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States of America would make the kind of statements that were made to Mr. Tom Brokaw of NBC-TV on Sunday, August 24, 2008. What the Speaker had to say about theologians and their positions regarding abortion was not only misinformed; it was also, and especially, utterly incredible in this day and age.
We are blessed in the 21st century with crystal-clear photographs and action films of the living realities within their pregnant mothers. No one with the slightest measure of integrity or honor could fail to know what these marvelous beings manifestly, clearly, and obviously are, as they smile and wave into the world outside the womb. In simplest terms, they are human beings with an inalienable right to live, a right that the Speaker of the House of Representatives is bound to defend at all costs for the most basic of ethical reasons. They are not parts of their mothers, and what they are depends not at all upon the opinions of theologians of any faith. Anyone who dares to defend that they may be legitimately killed because another human being “chooses” to do so or for any other equally ridiculous reason should not be providing leadership in a civilized democracy worthy of the name.
Edward Cardinal Egan
Archbishop of New York

Wow! Wow! Wow! I was thinking about writing down my thoughts on what Cardinal Egan said but then I thought to myself there was absolutely nothing left to say. Cardinal Egan threw down the gauntlet. He said what he meant in clear language. And all I can say is “Wow” and “Thank God.”

Amen. And, God bless him for his courage.

Archbishop Chaput also weighed in on Mrs. Pelosi. There will be a special place in heaven for these bishops who are doing their job!

bla-blam! where’s the pseudonymous al sharpton on this one?

Whew, that shook dust free from the ceiling in here, and I didn’t even read it aloud.
Do angels high-five? I bet they just started.
August 26, 2008 at 8:06 pm
Rock on, Cardinal Egan!! Now let's pray that these strong words (and those of Archbishop Chaput) have some real impact… resounding with Nancy & Company as well as other pro-choice "Catholics."
August 26, 2008 at 8:48 pm
that was devastating. i’m sure it will get to her.
August 26, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Will she get a partial refund for the “gross” Catholic education she got?
August 26, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Does anyone know of a contact email for letters of support for the brave Cardinal?
I’d like to send an “atta boy.”
August 26, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Now there’s a leader I’m proud to follow into battle! Onward Catholic soldiers! Archbishop Wuerl, are you listening??
August 26, 2008 at 10:03 pm
It is quite refreshing to find that His Eminence, Cardinal Egan joins the ever-faithful Archbishop Chaput as well as Archbishop Wuerl in lambasting Mrs. Pelosi’s rather dimwitted remarks regarding the Church’s position on abortion. Let us pray that Mrs. Pelosi, Senator Biden, et al, among Catholic politicians will find their way back to obedience at least in the teachings of the Church whom they claim as their own. Let us pray and hope, but don’t bet the south forty on it.

I’d like to correct my comment – apparently Archbishop Wuerl has made a statement on the Archdiocese of Washington DC website. Mea culpa.

Bravo!!!

Pelosi has given us a good opportunity to lower the boom on all the CINO politicians. Her asinine comments show up these so-called “Catholics” for who and what they really are – fakes, liars, wolves. They have been given every opportunity to reform. By their actions, they are fully complicit with the abortion industry for the destruction of millions of lives. It’s way past the point of informing them that they have put themselves outside the Church. If they are denied communion, censured and then respond by reforming their ways – good! great! If they do not make amends – they, themselves, have decided their fate by their choice.

Not asleep at the wheel, he!
August 26, 2008 at 11:57 pm
Wow! No subleties! May God be pleased to send us more such bishops.

Why was the following of Pelosi’s not addressed?
“My Republican colleagues do not support contraception. If you want to reduce the number of abortions, and we all do, we must–it would behoove you to support family planning and, and contraception, you would think. But that is not the case. So we have to take–you know, we have to handle this as respectfully–this is sacred ground.”
Why was the contraception part not addressed also along with abortion?

So… Denver’s Chaput, D.C.’s Wuerl, NYC’s Egan and Philly’s Rigali all come out swinging without any hesitation or equivocation.
Meanwhile, SF’s Niederauer and L.A.’s Mahony???
August 27, 2008 at 12:41 am
I should also add Burke to the Chaput list.
August 27, 2008 at 2:12 am
Wuel’s statement was weak! in comparison to the other two Bishops. And even weaker was Niederauer’s – pathetic, really. All he did was republish the USCCB’s statement.
