The media has been fanning the flames of anti-Catholicism this month and now a columnist for the state owned ABC in Australia is comparing the Pope to Osama bin Laden and asking, “Why not bomb the Vatican, and riddle the Pope with bullets as he staggers out of the flames?”
Columnist Bob Ellis, in what has to be the most alarmingly ignorant and offensively anti-Catholic piece in the mainstream media, compares Pope Benedict to Osama Bin Laden:

Yes ANOTHER reason for us to shake our heads in disgust at the Australians.

Frightening.

Msgr. Robert Hugh Benson looks more and more like a bona fide prophet every day.

The Pope has replaced Bush/Cheney. Mention the name Benedict XVI to a Moonbat and watch his head explode. This kind of rage has become almost continuous amongst the intellegentsia and so-called elite. Thier deep reseviors of hate, bile, and rage would be quite fascinating to observe if it wasn't so frightening.
Just think of the effot it took Ellis to concoct his numbers of victims in order to rationalize his equivalancy of Benedict to Bin Laden. He is really quite out of his mind.

If you actually read the article cited, Mr. Ellis isn't calling for violence at all.
This statement sums up his article fairly well:
"It is worthwhile, I think, to make these connections, of how forgivingly we treat the First World rich and the contrasting way we treat the Third World poor. How we treat the crimes of Christians and of heathens in very different ways."
April 15, 2010 at 6:26 pm
Craig, the fact that you think there is something profound in that quotation shows that you have no capacity for intellectual discrimination.
April 15, 2010 at 6:44 pm
jc,
I don't think there's "something profound" in that quotation at all.
But it does sum up the article much, much better than Mr. Archbold's post.
April 15, 2010 at 6:55 pm
So Craig, you agree with Mr Ellis's assertion that Pope Benedict and Osama Bin Laden are morally equivalent? That is the gist of his so-called Op-Ed.
April 15, 2010 at 7:33 pm
Mr. Ellis is cracked. There's a big difference between a guy whose entire organization is specifically dedicated to terrorism (OBL) and a person who is dealing with a small minority who disobey their sworn vows (the Pope). The closest parallel to Osama bin Laden is actually the head of NAMBLA, not His Holiness.

If I had written an article comparing an abortion clinic to al queda and ended with the question, "Why not bomb abortion clinics?" I'd be hounded to death by these very progressives giving this a pass; and if I was in Canada I would be rendered destitute from legal fees fighting a case against the Human Rights Commission.
April 15, 2010 at 7:45 pm
For every well published nitwit like Ellis there are hundreds of "yes men" willing to back up any acts against the villain of the moment. Unfortunately at the moment that villain is very likely to have their evil tied to Catholicism.
We have to stop being silent, we have to bring our very real presence into everyday living. That would include wearing lapel buttons identifying us as Catholic, initiating discussions about the persecution of the Church as we gather around the water cooler, etc.
By voluntarily placing ourselves in the crosshairs in this fashion, we'll bring the argument to the open where the lack of reason and prevalence of blind prejudice will become glaringly obvious.
Just my opinion.
April 15, 2010 at 7:53 pm
Is anyone else thinking of "A Time to Kill" right now? "Now I want you to close your eyes… and imagine Osama Bin Laden is white."
Yowza. Wake up and smell the reality, Craig.

I completely agree with Subvet. If we care at all for the souls of our brethren, now is the time to take on evangelization. The blood of the martyrs should not have been shed in vain, why do we hide behind our guises? We must fast and pray for the Pope, and stand with him. If that's all the way to Crucifixion, then we're called to this journey. Its time to witness to the Truth that is the Catholic Church, and the Rock of Peter.

Oh and Matt, the comments under your article were hideous. Praying for you too!

It doesn't get more pig-headed than that!!! May God strike him down for his arrogance.
April 16, 2010 at 4:12 am
Ok, I'm with Subvet as far as evangelizing goes… but….buttons identifying us as Catholics? I guess it's better than being forced by the gov. to wear the yellow stars… I mean, buttons… Kim

instead of buttons, how about this awesome Pope Benedict XVI T-shirt?

sometimes I wish we could have permanent Ash Wednesday crosses on our foreheads. Would make finding members for my uni's Catholic Society so much easier. =p
(I'm in Australia – though not Australian. and the Catholic Church is supposed to be the largest here, yet we have such a small Society!)
April 16, 2010 at 1:34 pm
Hahah Pennnycake! In "The Bad Catholic's Guide to Good Living" (a fun read btw) they call Ash Wednesday "Catholic Mating Day" because you can find a "future mate that much easier by the discerning black cross on one's forehead" (I'm paraphrasing)…Absolutely hilarious, and your comments made me think of it!
April 16, 2010 at 5:00 pm
Heheheheh. I agree with Patty. The cover of the follow-up, "The Bad Catholic's Guide to Wine, Whiskey, and Song" has a fantastic shot of Benedict XVI hoisting a tankard of beer. I can't follow Pennycake's link right now but I dearly hope that image is the one on the cafepress shirt. Meet the enemy with good cheer!

Whether or not the remark about bombing the Vatican and shooting the Pope was meant to be a joke, it is still an extremely mean-spirited and eliminationist joke.
