Wow! This is a brilliantly scathing response to Nancy Pelosi and her comments on Meet The Press Sunday concerning abortion. Here’s the amazing statement in full.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 26, 2008
STATEMENT OF HIS EMINENCE, EDWARD CARDINAL EGAN CONCERNING REMARKS MADE BY THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
Like many other citizens of this nation, I was shocked to learn that the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States of America would make the kind of statements that were made to Mr. Tom Brokaw of NBC-TV on Sunday, August 24, 2008. What the Speaker had to say about theologians and their positions regarding abortion was not only misinformed; it was also, and especially, utterly incredible in this day and age.
We are blessed in the 21st century with crystal-clear photographs and action films of the living realities within their pregnant mothers. No one with the slightest measure of integrity or honor could fail to know what these marvelous beings manifestly, clearly, and obviously are, as they smile and wave into the world outside the womb. In simplest terms, they are human beings with an inalienable right to live, a right that the Speaker of the House of Representatives is bound to defend at all costs for the most basic of ethical reasons. They are not parts of their mothers, and what they are depends not at all upon the opinions of theologians of any faith. Anyone who dares to defend that they may be legitimately killed because another human being “chooses” to do so or for any other equally ridiculous reason should not be providing leadership in a civilized democracy worthy of the name.
Edward Cardinal Egan
Archbishop of New York

Wow! Wow! Wow! I was thinking about writing down my thoughts on what Cardinal Egan said but then I thought to myself there was absolutely nothing left to say. Cardinal Egan threw down the gauntlet. He said what he meant in clear language. And all I can say is “Wow” and “Thank God.”

I think we are moving towards an inevitable confrontation of a Pro-Abortion, Catholic politician being refused the Eucharist in public for all to see. It’s coming, much sooner than anyone thinks.

Fr. Z reported last night that the newspaper of the Archdiocese of San Francisco released a statement, and it was not exactly fluffy. In that article, they report that Abp Nierdauer is planning to address the matter in his September 5th column. The only reason I can think of for a delay is that he wants to talk to her to see if she will accept correction (am I being too hopeful?). This is technically what should happen is a private meeting first. If she is still obstinate, then it will be interesting to see how he responds. Pray that this bishop does speak wit her, and that it isn’t a matter of telling her to not use the “C” word when talking politics.

Or maybe he’s working out the details on the decree of excommunication?

Add Bishop Lori of Bridgeport CT diocese, the Chaplain of the Knights of Columbus (if someone hasn’t already – I just skimmed the comments). He wrote the USCCB response.
