Time Magazine worries that the Pope hasn’t made any statement about the passing of Senator Edward Kennedy in a piece entitled “After Kennedy’s Death: Silence from the Pope.
As of yet, unlike some other world leaders, Pope Benedict has not commented or issued an official communique in response to Kennedy’s death.
Giving it more prominence is the fact that the story is also linked above the banner on the Drudge Report.
Hey Time Mag, did you know 146,000 people die every day and 99.9999 percent of the people who die don’t go remarked on by the Pope?
Hey Time Mag, just because Ted Kennedy was your guiding star on immigration reform and abortion, doesn’t mean he was all things to all people.
Hey Time Mag, although Kennedy was your favorite Catholic he was still just a Senator.
Hey Time Mag, the Pope is the Pope of the world. Not Washington DC. And not just America either. The world.
And Ted Kennedy doesn’t need a press release right now. He needs prayers. And that, I’m sure, he’s getting from the Pope. And the Pope is praying for the other 145,999 folks that died the same day as well.

Give me an effing break.
Personally, I'd like to hear the pope eulogize Farrah Fawcett over fat-boy anyday.

Silence speaks volumes.

As Sister Gertrude Joseph used to say to us 8th graders, "Silence is golden!"

I never saw such a number, but quickly netted my way around and sure enough, confirmed that about 150000 'persons' die daily. Excluded from those numbers are obviously the 115,000 global unborn killed by abortions thanks in part to the policies TK and others promoted during his span of years. Another shattering perspective is that the official number one killer in the US was heart disease, sending about 1800 daily to their Maker, versus the 3500 daily aborted…
So in the end, I am sure the Pope has many to pray for….

I have prayed for the repose of Senator Keenedy's soul and I hope that he made peace with God before he died, though I have not heard anything about a sacramental confession or extreme unction (that would perhaps not interest the secular media any way). My question is: does the current Code of Canon Law still provide that "public sinners" should not be given a public Requiem Mass or Christian burial? I rather fear that the senator's funeral will be the worst sort of pop Catholicism. I even heard Obama will speak during the Mass.

You think maybe Time magazine was hoping that in addition to all the over the top lauds that the Vatican might consider beatification?
August 28, 2009 at 8:56 pm
I hope the Pope NEVER says a word about pro-abortion Teddy–the American public sinner— that ignored the Church and its teachings his entire life. Too much undue adulation is given our crooked politicians, especially the "catholic" ones. Let God sort out what is due Mr. K.
Hang tough Pope Benedict!!!

I'm SOOOO sick of the Catholic blogosphere going on and on and on and on about the senator, he's dead and it is now ALL UP TO GOD.
Now, can we just get on with our lives and our efforts to turn this world around???
Maybe it would help if we all spent time with our copies of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
August 28, 2009 at 10:05 pm
Ah, but politicians like Ted Kennedy are elected by lay Catholics amongst the masses. I say, we can no longer be as silent as we've been. Rather, this is an issue that needs to be shouted from everyone's blog!
No more "personally opposed" Catholics in office!! No more voting for pro-abort Catholics! No more!!
August 28, 2009 at 10:34 pm
Hur – you don't seem to be getting it. He's dead, but his legacy is far from it. If leftists/dissenters try and market him now as the "ideal Catholic" (i.e. he believed what he wanted, did what he wanted whenever he wanted and got along with the church just fine) then he will continue to cause the church scandal, even in death. I think most of us here are saying "Enough!"
August 28, 2009 at 10:36 pm
I should qualify my 3rd sentence above with: "If leftists/dissenters (priests and bishops among them)…"
August 28, 2009 at 11:54 pm
If a mans actions or inaction led to the carnage of 50+ million, then that will be quite a baggage to haul up there. If he made a public repentance then that could have been a start. One can only hope for a last minute conversion. Otherwise, based on the Churches teaching & guidance, the possibility of eternal damnation in hell is not far fetched. Isn't that the message that the bishop sent a few pro-aborts when they excommunicated them? And to move on to the world of the living, the Pelosis, Sebellius and the likes of them better wise up before time runs out.

Yup. It begins. CNN quotes some priest as saying Kennedy was a man of quiet faith.
So, we will now have all the liberal priests and wannabe "catholic" theologians coming out of the woodwork saying, "He was the strongest (most ardent) Catholic we ever met. Sure, he couldn't "reconcile" his views on abortion. But hey, we all need to follow our conscience."
Makes me sick.

The Pope sent a letter. Apparently.

That letter from Rome was before he died. Not something that acknowledges his death. I hope the Pope doesn't acknowledge his death at the whim of the liberal media. Prayers– sure… but public statements–why? Why should the Pope do that?
As for Obama speaking at the Mass, I won't even watch it. I just can't watch it. My heart breaks for those Masses that are being done all over the world for faithful Catholics and this is the one that's being spread far and wide. Almost reduces the Requiem Mass down to nothing more than a circus.

I'm with Seminarian on this question, and I believe I've already posted it here, but it has yet to be answered. If a politician dies in the state of formal excommunication (voluntary excommunication from public support of abortion) then according to Canon Law can they receive a Catholic funeral? Maybe Rick you could help us out with that one? Was Ted Kennedy in formal excommunication in his Diocese? I'm not sure???
Rick!!! Help!!!!

Today's Magnificat opens the morning prayer with this from 1 Timothy 5:20 — "Reprimand publicly those who do sin, so that the rest also will be afraid."
This on the Memorial of the Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist who knew about speaking & witnessing God's word to power and gave his life for the consequences.

Teddy was one of Boston's "Good ol' boys": Irish, Catholic, hard-liver (meaning he lived hard, not that his liver was hardened by drinking, but that too actually) and played dirty when he needed to. The entire infrastructure (political and religious) has been corrupted to the core (Cardinal Law, anyone?). I for one am happy to see one less "spirit of Vatican II" promoting liberal crony out of the picture.
Time to clean house.
